RUSD Interim Blueprints in ELA and Math: outline the standards assessed in the fall and winter interim assessments. Teacher teams met in May 2015 to review SBAC Blueprints, Achieve the Core Focus Documents, SBAC Content Specifications, and RUSD curriculum to make an informed decision about which SBAC Interims to select. Each document provides the closing date, assessment title, claims, and standards addressed on the assessment. Each site team should use these blueprints to inform instruction leading up to the assessment. These two assessments provide feedback to teachers and students on the progress of student learning and should be considered along with other data points - such as site-based common assessments, classroom projects, teacher observation - to inform ongoing instruction throughout the year. Teachers can view the SBAC Interim Block Assessments by logging into the SBAC Interim Viewing system with their TOMS account (2014-2015 accounts are still valid; see your Test Site Coordinator for login information if needed). By viewing the assessment items, teachers can understand the skills, concepts and knowledge needed to be successful, which informs instructional planning. Items should not be shared with students prior to the the administration. The SBAC Interim Assessment Blueprints in ELA and Mathematics also provide information about the assessment targets addressed on each block. SBAC Interim Assessments that are not part of the RUSD district interim listed on the blueprints below may be used throughout the year by teacher teams as common assessments

    • Download file "Grade 6 ELA RUSD Interim Blueprints.pdf" Based on feedback from Fall 2015, all performance tasks will be optional for Winter 2016. As a district, we want to ensure the interim assessments are a meaningful tool for improving teaching and learning. As such, we will work to incorporate the review and reflection on the math performance task into the ongoing professional development of teachers. That said, we encourage all site grade-level teams to view the Math Performance Task in the Interim Assessment Viewing system, identify the skills/concepts/knowledge required for success on this task, and reflect on how ongoing classroom instruction can support student success on this type of assessment

As such, the Grade 7-12 ELA teachers will review and reflect on their performance task during January professional development with Katie Elder. This time will include viewing the Performance Task in the Interim Assessment Viewing system, identifying the skills/concepts/knowledge required for success on this task, and reflecting on how ongoing classroom instruction can support student success on this type of assessment.

Science - During the 2014-2015 school year, teacher teams developed performance tasks for the RUSD Interims. The purpose of this project was to provide performance-based tasks that align to the CCSS literacy standards as well as the new NGSS. Preparing students for college and career is an interdisciplinary effort, and including assessments in Science and Social Studies that align to new common core expectations supports this endeavor. The design team identified a common template to use in designing the performance tasks. The template is posted below. For the 2015-2016 school year, site-based common course teams have three options for the RUSD Interim assessments: (1) Administer the same task you developed last year; (2) Review the library of performance tasks from last year and administer a performance task from another team; (3) Modify an existing performance task, or develop a new one to administer. Each site team will set up a common rubric in OARS to record the scores of all students at their sites. Student Assessment will again assist sites who need help setting up a common course rubric in OARS. If a team decides to modify an existing task, or develop a new task, they must use the RUSD Performance Task Template created by the design team last year and provide Student Assessment with a master copy of the modified/new assessment, which will be added to the library for future use.

Up to this point, Kim Louie has created each answer key in OARS for each site team and course at each site. This has been problematic because site teams continue to improve and modify the original Performance Tasks. Therefore, the answer key we have on file usually does not match the PT that sites want to administer. To streamline this process, each site team can now create their own answer key in OARS. The steps are:

o Site team decides on the Performance Task to administer (common assessment)

o One team member creates an answer key in OARS and shares it with the team (Kim has created a screencast to walk teachers through this process and OARS has a screenshot step-by-step for sharing)

o Site team enters rubric scores for the performance task

o Contact Kim Louie for any support needed through this process. She has also written a step-by-step sheet I’ve attached to this email.

    Feedback:

    • Following past practice from the past four years, we bring teachers together in Spring 2016 to reflect on and revise the current Instructional Maps, Interim Blueprints, and make adjustments to the current RUSD assessment system. The goal is to ensure local assessments are a meaningful tool to improve teaching and learning. Part of this revision process will include reviewing survey feedback from teachers. This has been an effective way to include a broad representation of RUSD teacher voices in the past. Click here to provide your feedback.
